| Head Coach - Joe Scarano, University
of Tennessee at Martin
Joe Scarano is in his second year as graduate assistant baseball coach
for the University of Tennessee at Martin for the 2008-2009 season.
Scarano comes to UT Martin from Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., where
he was the head baseball coach for three years, from 2005-2007. While at
Gordon, Scarano led the Fighting Scots to two postseason playoff
appearances in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Scarano also
coached in the New York Collegiate Baseball league in the summer of
2007, as an assistant with the Niagara Power, a Fellowship of Christian
Athletes affiliate. A native of Lynnfield Mass., Scarano graduated
from Salem State College in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in educational
studies and psychology. He was a four-year starter in the outfield for
the Salem State Vikings and helped lead his team to the Massachusetts
State College Conference Championship in 1999. For the Skyhawks, Scarano
assists with hitters and the offense, directs the outfielders on defense
and is responsible for summer collegiate player placement. In addition
to his baseball duties at UT Martin, Scarano is pursuing his master's
degree in education; area of concentration, Human Health and
Performance. Scarano is married to the former Heather Medcalf of
Fairfax, Va. They are the parents of two sons, two-year-old Christian
and three-month-old Henry. The family resides in Martin.
Pitching Coach - Jake
Weghorst, University of West Virginia
Jake Weghorst, one of Baylor University's
primary setup men in 2007, has joined The University of Tennessee at
Martin's baseball coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.
Weghorst, a right-handed pitcher, made 19 appearances, all in relief for
Baylor during his senior year in 2007. He pitched in five Big 12
Conference games and was 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 17.0 innings. He was
named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll two times and played in
two NCAA regionals. In 2006, he set a record for the most innings in Big
12 play without allowing an earned run in Baylor history. He also ended
the 2006 season with a 27.0-innings scoreless streak that covered 17
appearances. After graduating from Baylor, Weghorst coached at the Buzz
Lightning Baseball Academy and in the Texas Collegiate Summer League. He
had three players drafted including Brian Price who was drafted in the
first round by the Boston Red Sox. Weghorst transferred to Baylor from
Angelina Junior College where he pitched for head coach Jeff Livin for
two seasons. Weghorst led Angelina to a 47-14record and a No. 11
national ranking in 2005. He helped the Roadrunners win a conference
title and a second-place finish. He earned first-team all-conference
honors in 2004 and played in the 2004 Texas-New Mexico Junior College
All-Star game. He prepped at Lorena High School and played for head
coach Greg Blanchard. He led Lorena to the 2003 Texas 3A championship
and was named the 2003 Texas 3A Player of the Year. He was a three-time
all-state selection. Weghorst is the son of Greg and Sherri Weghorst and
he has a bachelor's degree in health and human performance. His brother,
Greg, is the media relations director for the American Southwest
Conference.
Assistant Coach -
Jesse Henry, Shenandoah University
Jesse
is a first year coach for the Front Royal Cardinals. Jesse
attends Shenandoah University where he was a member of the
Shenandoah Baseball Team who made two D3 World Series appearances.
Jesse played Short Stop for the Hornets.
Team Trainer - Jenni Haywood, University of West
Virginia
Jenni Haywood has provided Training assistance for
the Front Royal Cardinals and the New Market Rebels over the last 5
years. Miss Haywood will provided Training for the Baseball
Season.
