8.2.09 First place!  Cards earn top seed in eight-team VBL tournament, beginning Sunday night in Front Royal.

FRONT ROYAL, Va. --- Two minutes was all it took for the Front Royal Cardinals to finish the Valley Baseball League regular season in first place, and secure the top seed and home field advantage in the VBL's eight-team playoff tournament beginning tonight at Bing Crosby Stadium.

Completing a game that had been suspended July 20 due to rain in the bottom of the ninth inning, Front Royal returned to New Market Saturday afternoon and got the quick two outs it needed to win the game and set a Front Royal Cardinal's record for most wins in a season with 29.  With the bases full of Rebels and Front Royal holding a narrow one-run lead, Ryan George (Holy Cross) took the mound for Cardinals, striking out the first batter and getting the second batter to fly out to center field, using a total of just seven pitches.

The 5-4 win at New Market completed a remarkable turnaround season for the Front Royal Cardinals, who finished in last place with a record of 12-32 in 2008.  This year, under the management of first-year head coach Joe Scarano (Tennessee-Martin) Front Royal finished in first place, out of 12 teams, with a 29-15 worksheet.

The Cardinals also won the 2009 VBL North Division title, clinching at least a share of the championship in dramatic fashion July 28 in a home contest against Winchester.  With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jared Simon (Tampa) and Dan Evatt (Baylor) hit back-to-back solo home runs to walk off with a stunning victory against the Royals, 3-2.  The Cardinals, who finished the season with a league-best 51 home runs, clinched the title outright the following evening with a Winchester loss to Fauquier.

Front Royal continues its quest for its first VBL Championship since 1986 tonight, Sunday Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m., when the team hosts eighth-seed Covington at Bing Crosby Stadium.  The Lumberjacks finished the regular season second in the South Division with a 21-23 record.

The first round of the tournament is a best-of-three series.  The second round of the playoffs will begin immediately following the conclusion of the first round, and will also be a best-of-three series.  Teams will be reseeded after the each round, but as the No. 1 seed, the Cardinals will have home field advantage throughout the tournament, for as long as they stay alive.  The VBL championship will be a best-of-five series.  For more information on the 2009 VBL Tournament Cup, visit www.valleyleaguebaseball.com or http://allthingsvalleyleague.typepad.com/

7.19.09 Front Royal notches two more wins.  Improves win streak to five.

FRONT ROYAL, Va. --- The Front Royal Cardinals added two more wins to its 2009 worksheet after a weekend home stand at Bing Crosby Stadium.  On Saturday night the Cardinals hosted Rockbridge, defeating the Rapids 3-2.  The Staunton Braves traveled to Front Royal Sunday night, and lost their third contest of the summer to the Cardinals, 4-1.  The two games concluded Front Royal's schedule against the Valley Baseball League's South Division.  The Cardinals finish the season 11-1 against their southern foes and improve their overall record to 21-13.

Matt Bowling earned his third win of the season Saturday night against the Rapids, striking out 11 and allowing just one run.  Bolwing, a junior right-hander from Lipscomb, pitched five solid innings for the Cardinals.  At the plate, Jared Simon (Tampa) and Steve McQuail (Canisius) each doubled in the game, while the Cardinals' junior catcher from Cincinnati Jim Jacquot doubled twice.  Jacquot went 2-4 with one RBI on the night.

Against Staunton, Robert Nixon pitched six and two-thirds quality innings for the Cardinals, claiming his fourth win of the summer, while Ryan George earned his team-best fifth save of the season.  Offensively for Front Royal, Jared Simon went 3-4 with a line-drive home run to left field, one double and three RBI.

The Cardinals travel to New Market Monday night for a make-up game against the Rebels.

7.17.09 Cardinals sizzle in second half. Win three straight after the VBL All-Star break.

FRONT ROYAL, Va. --- This is one case where math is easy: four home runs, 24 runs and just seven runs allowed in three games adds up to three straight victories for the Front Royal Cardinals, a team that now sits alone atop the Valley Baseball League standings with a 19-3 overall record and an 8-7 worksheet in the North Division.

Dan Evatt, a redshirt freshman from Baylor, set the tone swiftly for the Cardinal's second half with back-to-back home runs in Front Royal's first game post-All-Star break.  Evatt's pair of power balls, a three-run blast in the first inning and a solo shot in the second, propelled the Cardinals to a 10-2 win over Haymarket (15-16) in front of a home crowd at Bing Crosby Stadium on Tuesday night.

Greg Van Sickler, a sophomore from Shenandoah University, earned his fourth win of the season on the mound for the Cards, striking out six and scattering six hits in six solid innings of work.  Sophomore Oren Rasowsky of Adelphi earned his first save of the summer.

On Thursday night the Cardinals traveled south to Staunton for a match-up with the Braves (17-13).  Front Royal put up 12 hits, including a two-run over-the-fencer off the bat of James Roche (Bentley), to best the Braves 9-4.  Notching his fourth win of the summer was Ross Speed, a sophomore from Baylor, who struck out six and allowed just two runs on five hits.

The Waynesboro Generals would be the next to fall victim to Front Royal, in a Friday night contest at Waynesboro.  The Cardinals topped the Generals 5-1, taking advantage of seven hits and a two-run homer to left field in the fifth inning by Jared Simon (Tampa).

Front Royal's left-hander Shane Galloway (Brevard) earned his first win of the season, striking out four and allowing just one run through six innings.  Josh Varner of West Alabama got his second save working three innings against the Generals.

The Cardinals host the Rockbridge Rapids Saturday night at Bing Crosby Stadium.  Action gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

7.13.09 Three Cardinals play in VBL All-Star game; Steve McQuail wins Home Run Derby

FRONT ROYAL, Va. --- Despite a strong headwind and a long fence, the Front Royal Cardinal's Steve McQuail made it official Sunday night … He is King.

McQuail, who has led the Valley Baseball League in home runs all season (currently with 11), sailed two balls out of the park Sunday night at Central High School in Woodstock, Va. to win the VBL’s Home Run Derby, held just before the league's All-Star game, the evening’s main event.

The Wantagh, N.Y. native told The Northern Virginia Daily after the derby, “I had a great feeling in my hands.  I felt like if I just let the bat fly, then it will do the work.”

McQuail, a sophomore from Canisius College, also impressed the crowd of more than 700, which included upwards of 25 Major League Baseball scouts and affiliates, in the pre-game 60-yard dash, which he ran in just over 6.7 seconds.  McQuail did not disappoint in the All-Star game either.  Starting at third base and batting fourth, he had two hits and one walk in five at-bats.

“I’m not surprised by Stephen’s performance,” said the Cardinals’ first-year head coach Joe Scarano.  “He’s a special kid, and a determined ball player.  Stephen was paired up in the 60 with Justin Wilson, the fastest man, and I think Stephen just chased him down and came out with a good time.  That’s what Stephen is all about.  He pushes himself to the limit, in his training and in his game.”

Two other Cardinals made debut appearances in the VBL’s All-Star game, along with McQuail.  The Cardinal trio played for the North team, which lost the game 1-0, despite putting up nine hits to the South’s three.

Jared Simon, a sophomore from the University of Tampa, started in right field and batted second, representing the Cardinals on the North’s roster.  Simon, from Tampa, Fla, earned a spot on the team batting .336 with 43 hits (2nd in the league), 7 home runs (tied for 3rd) and 23 RBI.

“Jared is a balanced hitter with a solid approach.  He’s physically strong and his swing really plays to all fields,” said Scarano.  “Ultimately, Jared came ready to play.  From the first swings he took in batting practice here in Front Royal, to today, Jared has been good, consistently good.  He’s a really advanced hitter for his age.”

Representing Front Royal on the mound in the All-Star game was Greg Van Sickler, a sophomore hurler and All-American from Shenandoah University.  Van Sickler, a native of Winchester, Va., boasts a 3-1 record and a 3.69 ERA.  In five starts and 122 batters faced, the right-hander has struck out 28, and given up only three walks.   Van Sickler pitched the fourth inning of the All-Star game, giving up one hit, striking out one and walking none.

“Greg’s a great baseball player,” said Scarano.  “He knows what he can do and he’s good at what he does. Greg’s not intimated by any situation.  He stays within himself, sticks with an approach and let’s his ability do the rest.”

Another Cardinal pitcher, Jeff DeCarlo, a left-handed junior from the University of Michigan, was selected as one of two alternates for the North’s All-Star roster.  In eight appearances as a reliever for the Cardinals, DeCarlo sports a 1.89 ERA.  DeCarlo, of Medford, Mass., has worked 19 innings and struck out an impressive 20 batters.

“Jeff plays a very important role on our team,” Scarano said.  “He’s a mature player with a lot of experience.  Jeff has done a really nice job so far this year out of the bullpen, and we expect him to continue to help this team as we make our push for the playoffs.”

At 16-13 midway through the season, the Cardinals hope their best baseball is ahead of them.

“We will certainly continue to try to play good, fundamental baseball,” Scarano said.  “We’re in a good position to make a move for the playoffs.  It will really come down to our willingness to stick to the process and keep fighting to win ballgames.”

Note: Greg Van Sickler, Jared Simon and Stephen McQuail have been chosen to participate in the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Summer Classic All-Star game, to be played July 15 in Waldorf, Md. at Regency Furniture Stadium.  The Mid-Atlantic Classic pits all-stars from the VBL against all-stars from the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League. A committee consisting of VBL coaches, owners and league officials selected a squad of 12 pitchers and 16 field players from the two 28-man rosters in Sunday’s VBL All-Star game.  Simon and McQuail will also hit the Mid-Atlantic Classic’s Home Run Derby.

7.12.09 Eight-game win streak at the Bing ends in extra-innings loss to Fauquier

FRONT ROYAL, Va. --- One of the longest home winning streaks in the 25-year history of the Front Royal Cardinals was broken Saturday night in an extra-innings battle against the Fauquier Gators at Bing Crosby Stadium.   With the game tied 3-3, the Gators put up three runs on two Cardinal errors and a hit batsman in the top of the 13th to get the win.  Valley Baseball League North division rival Fauquier improves to 15-15 overall and 7-7 in the North, while the Cards drop to 16-13 overall and 7-7 in the division.  In six meetings so far this season, the Gators have topped the Cardinals four times.

The Cardinals entered Saturday night's game with the fewest homeruns allowed in the league (5), but Fauquier's Ryan Gauck, a junior from Marist, managed to muscle two of Front Royal starter Robert Nixon's pitches out of the park.  Still, it was an impressive performance overall for Nixon, who allowed just three runs in nine complete innings of work.  Nixon, a junior from Adelphi, struck out eight and walked none.

While the defense was solid through 12 innings, Front Royal's offense struggled to get timely hits.  In the bottom of the 12th, the Cards had a runner on third base with two outs after a one-out pinch-hit double to leftfield by Dan Evatt (Baylor) and a sacrifice ground-out to second base by Buddy Sosnoskie (Virginia Tech). But Front Royal failed to get the run across the plate, and the opportunity proved to be the team's last chance at victory.

The Cards also were unable to hit the long ball for the first time in thirteen games.  Front Royal had a league best 12-game streak with at least one homerun, but Fauquier silenced the big bats Saturday night.  Front Royal continues to lead the league in team homeruns with 33.

Dan Rossignol suffered the loss for Front Royal on the mound, dropping to 2-2 after giving up three runs (two unearned) in one-third innings of work in the 13th.

The Cardinals have two days off before hosting Haymarket (14-15) in a make-up contest at the Bing at 7:30 p.m.  Four Cardinals will make an appearance in the VBL's All-Star game Sunday  night at Woodstock Central High School: Steven McQuail (Canisius), Jared Simon (Tampa), Greg Van Sickler (Shenandoah) and alternate Jeff DeCarlo (Michigan).

7.10.09 NV Daily: Cardinals extend home win streak, top Generals

By Greg Brill

FRONT ROYAL, Va. --- Ross Speed had to keep pounding the strike zone.  Par for the course during Thursday night's start against Waynesboro, Speed would start innings well for the Cardinals, let the Generals get runners on base, and work his way out of trouble.

"He's the kind of guy if he gets you to two strikes, he puts you away with his slider," Front Royal manager Joe Scarano said of Speed.  "He used that to overcome some of the adversity he's seen."

That he had high school teammate Doug Oney as his catcher went a long way in guiding Speed through his seven innings, as Front Royal picked up a 5-0 Valley Baseball League win at Bing Crosby Stadium.  Read full story from the Northern Virginia Daily

6.20.09 Front Royal puts the pressure on, takes advantage of Waynesboro miscues to top the Generals 5-2

FRONT ROYAL, VA. --- The Front Royal Cardinals won their second consecutive game Friday night, beating host Waynesboro for the second time this season.  Going into the night, the Generals had the best record in the Valley Baseball League, and had sustained the longest winning streak (6), but Waynesboro couldn't hold off the Cardinals. The Cards stole four bases and took advantage of Waynesboro pitching mistakes en route to a 5-2 victory over the Generals.

Cardinal lead-off hitter Cody Kauffman (Franklin Pierce) was hit by a pitch his first two times at the plate, ultimately coming around to score both times.  In the first three innings, the Cardinals manufactured four runs on five hits with the help of Waynesboro's Ryan Knott (Duke), who got off to a shaky start on the mound, giving up a walk and two wild pitches to the Cardinals, in addition to the two hit batsman, in his two and one-third innings of work.

Starting pitching was solid for Front Royal, however.  Josh Varner, a right-handed sophomore from West Alabama, struck out six in six innings, earning his first win of the season.  The Cardinals also got another strong performance from the bullpen.  Zach Chastain (Georgia State) pitched two shutout innings and Ryan George (Holy Cross) earned his second save of the season, striking out two in the ninth.

At the plate for Front Royal, Greg Van Sickler (Shenandoah) went three-for-four with one RBI and James Roche (Bentely) went two-for-four with one RBI.  The other three RBI came off the bats of Kevin Brashears (Shenandoah), Jared Simon (Tampa) and Steve McQuail (Canisius).

The Cardinals improve to 6-5 overall and lead the VBL's North Division with a record of 4-3.  The Fauquier Gators visit Bing Crosby Stadium Saturday night for the fourth meeting between the two North Division rivals.  The Gators (5-5) lead the series 2-1.  Action gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

6.19.09 Cardinals halt five-game skid with commanding win over Winchester

FRONT ROYAL, VA. --- The Front Royal Cardinals put up 11 runs on 15 hits to end a five-game losing streak Thursday night at Bridgeforth Field in Winchester.  The Cardinals beat the host Royals 11-4, with a pair of homeruns and a near-perfect performance by right-handed reliever Dan Rossignol, a junior from the University of Rhode Island.  The Cardinals improve to 4-3 in the Valley Baseball League's North Division, tied for first with the Fauquier Gators, while the Royals drop to 2-4 and last place in the North.

Jared Simon, a sophomore from the University of Tampa, went 3-for-6 at the plate for the Cardinals, with 3 RBI and a homerun.  Simon sports a .415 batting average and leads the VBL in hits with 17.  Simon led off the ninth inning with a solo blast to left field that sparked a six-hit, five-run inning that put the game effectively out of reach for the Royals.

James Roche, a sophomore from Bentley College, knocked the other one out of the park for the Cardinals Thursday night, a two-run shot to right field, also in the ninth.  Cody Kauffman (Franklin Pierce), Steve McQuail (Canisius), Greg Van Sickler (Shenandoah), Kevin Brashears (Shenandoah) and Brandon Brewer (West Florida) each added two hits on the evening.

On the mound, Rossignol earned the win for Front Royal, coming in after four and one-thirds innings to relieve lefty starter Colin McGowan (Seton Hall).  Rossignol retired eight of nine batters in his two and two-thirds innings of work.  Junior right-hander Matt Bowling of Lipscomb pitched the eighth and ninth innings, getting the save, his first of the season.

Next up for the Cardinals is a Friday night match-up with the Waynesboro Generals (7-3) at Waynesboro.  The last time the two teams met on June 9, the Cardinals topped the Generals 3-1 with a walk-off homerun in front of a home crowd at Bing Crosby Stadium.  Action gets underway at 7 p.m.

6.17.09 Tonight's game against Haymarket postponed.

FRONT ROYAL, VA. --- Inclement weather has postponed Wednesday night's game at Bing Crosby Stadium against the Haymarket Senators.  It was to be the third meeting between the two teams, who are tied for second place in the Valley Baseball League's North Division with three wins and three losses apiece.  The game is tentatively rescheduled for July 13.

6.17.09 Front Royal slugger named VBL's North Player of the Week.

FRONT ROYAL, VA. --- The Front Royal Cardinals' Jared Simon hit .462 in the team's first seven games on his way to becoming the Valley Baseball Leagues' first North Player of the Week for the 2009 season.  Simon, a sophomore from the University of Tampa, had 12 hits in 26 at-bats with three homeruns, four doubles and eight RBI.

6.16.09 Cardinals drop fourth.  Front Royal commits seven errors on its way to a 13-1 loss against visiting Fauquier.

FRONT ROYAL, VA. --- Fielding errors and a lack of focus combined to give Front Royal its second consecutive loss at home this season and fourth straight loss overall.  The Cardinals fell 13-1 Monday night at Bing Crosby Stadium to Valley Baseball League North Division rival Faquier.  The Cardinals now stand at 4-4 in the VBL and 3-2 in the North Division.

"I'll take responsibility for the loss today, but I told our guys this is the last one I'm taking responsibility for," said first-year head coach Joe Scarano.  "We put a lot of work into winning those first four games, but since then we've backed off a little bit, and it showed tonight."

The Gators put up 13 runs on 11 hits while the Cardinals gave away 10 walks and seven unearned runs on seven errors.  Junior lefthander Shane Galloway pitched through five and two-thirds innings for the Cardinals and suffered the loss.  Galloway pitched solidly however, keeping his team in the game.  Going into the sixth, the Cardinals were only a run behind, trailing the Gators 2-1.

But in the sixth everything began to unravel for Front Royal.  Oren Rasowsky, a righthanded sophomore, came in to relieve Galloway after Fauquier got a run across the plate on an error at third base, and two runs on a double to centerfield.

In the seventh inning, the Cardinals committed two more errors which allowed the Gators to go ahead 7-1.  Front Royal allowed one run in the eighth and five more runs in the ninth.  Carrick Tuck, a junior from West Alabama, pitched one and one-third innings of relief, giving up four walks and five runs (one unearned) while  Dan Rossignol, a junior from Rhode Island, came in in the ninth to get the final two outs of the game, a strikeout and a fly out to centerfield.

It wasn't only the Cardinals' defense that was off.  Front Royal's offense managed just five hits and stranded seven base runners.  The only run of the night came in the first inning on a single RBI by sophomore Steven McQuail (Canisius) that scored Cody Kauffman.  Kauffman, a junior from Franklin Pierce, went 2-4 at the plate Monday night and sports a .346 batting average, the second highest of his team.  The other two Cardinal hits came from Buddy Sosnoskie, a redshirt freshman from Virignia Tech, and James Roche, a sophomore from Bentley College.

6.11.09 Cardinals still perfect after four.  Front Royal's Jared Simon hits three-run homer; pitchers combine for 17 strikeouts to beat host Fauquier Wednesday night.

FRONT ROYAL, VA. --- The Cardinals and Gators played just one inning Wednesday night before lightening delayed the first meeting between the two teams for nearly three hours, but one inning was all Jared Simon needed to put three runs up on the board for Front Royal.  Front Royal topped the Gators 6-3, improving to 4-0 on the season and keeping the team's win streak alive for one more night.

Simon, a sophomore from the University of Tampa, hit a three-run blast his first time up to the plate against Fauquier. On the night Simon went three-for-three with five RBI.

Defensively, the Cardinals had another impressive outing.  Front Royal's pitchers combined for a total of 17 strikeouts against the Gators.  Ross Speed, a sophomore from Baylor, started the game, striking out 10 batters through five innings.  Jeff DeCarlo, a junior left-hander from Michigan relieved Speed in the sixth and seventh innings, and sophomore Josh Varner of West Alabama finished the game.

The undefeated Cardinals have yet to trail in a game, and their team total of eight homeruns leads the Valley Baseball League, and is already half the total homeruns (16) Front Royal hit during the entire 2008 season.  Front Royal travels to Staunton (3-0) Thursday night to face the Braves, the only other unbeaten team in the VBL.  Action gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

6.10.09 Front Royal downs Waynesboro with walk-off homerun in the ninth.  Tough defense and the long-ball lift the Cardinals over the Generals in first home game of the season.

FRONT ROYAL, VA. --- In the Cardinals' home opener Tuesday night at Bing Crosby Stadium, the game ended exactly the way it began -- with a homerun.  The Cardinals beat the visiting Waynesboro Generals 3-1 in a pitcher's duel that only saw action in the first and last innings.

Buddy Sosnoskie, a redshirt freshman from Virginia Tech, led-off the game for the Cardinals, taking Waynesboro's starting right-hander, Tyler Almond of Wingate, deep on the first pitch.  In the ninth inning, sophomore Steven McQuail, of Canisius College, added two more runs, and one more homerun to his Valley Baseball League-leading total of four, with a walk-off shot to leftfield.

"Last night was the only game I've coached in which the first pitch of the game was a homerun, and the last pitch of the game was a homerun," said first-year head coach Joe Scarano.  "It was special."

After giving up the long-ball to Sosnoskie, Almond was solid for the Generals, holding Front Royal to just four hits in five innings and striking out six.  Sosnoskie's would be the lone run on the scoreboard for the next eight innings.

It wasn't until the top of the ninth inning, with Front Royal's Ryan George on the mound, that the Generals were able light up the scoreboard and tie the game.  With one out, Chris Enourato (West Virginia) doubled down the rightfield line to score Casey McElroy (Auburn) from second base.  The Cardinals were able to get an out on the play however, when Waynesboro's Tony Caldwell (Auburn) got caught between third base and home plate.

With a runner on second, two outs and the game tied at 1-1, Scarano brought in junior right-hander Matt Bowling of Lipscomb to get the final out, a fly out to centerfield.

Kevin Brashears, a sophomore from Shenandoah University, led off with a single in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the Cardinals' hot-hitting McQuail up to the plate.    McQuail handed the Generals' Brooks Cullen his first loss of the season with a walk-off homerun to leftfield.

On the mound to start the game for the Cardinals' was Shane Galloway, a junior left-hander from Brevard College.  Galloway had a strong showing, striking out four and giving up just two hits through seven innings of work.

Zach Chastain, a junior right-hander from Georgia State, also made his debut of the season for Front Royal, coming into the game in the eighth inning to relieve Galloway.   Bowling recorded the win for the Cardinals and Front Royal improves to 3-0 on the season.

Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Warrenton, Va. to face the Fauquier Gators (1-1), a VBL North Division-rival, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

6.8.09 Cardinal’s pitching and power-hitting too much for Royals.
Front Royal puts up three homeruns and strikes out nine to spoil Winchester’s home opener

WINCHESTER, VA. --- Not to be outdone by his teammate Steven McQuail, a sophomore from Canisius College who hit two homeruns Saturday night to help lead the Front Royal Cardinals over host Haymarket 10-1, Jared Simon hit two homeruns of his own Sunday evening against Valley Baseball League division-rival Winchester. The Cardinals beat the Royals 4-3, to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Simon, a sophomore from the University of Tampa, blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning over the leftfield lights that silenced both the home and visiting fans, as the crowd watched the ball soar onto an adjacent ball field. Simon homered again his next time at the plate, in the sixth, another laser to left-center.

Not to be outdone by Simon, McQuail added another homerun to his league-leading total of three, in the eighth inning against the Royals. The Cardinals now lead the VBL in team homeruns with five.

The Cardinals showed strength on defense, too. Front Royal’s starting pitcher, a sophomore right-hander from Shenandoah University (SU), Greg Van Sickler, frustrated the Royals’ hitters, striking out seven and walking none through eight innings of work. His seven strikeouts on the night, ties him for second-place in the VBL standings for most batters struck out.

Van Sickler, of Stephenson, Va. was recently named a 2009 third-team American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-American, as he helped lead the SU Hornets to a sixth-place finish in the 2009 NCAA D-3 College World Series.

“Greg was solid tonight, and he only got better as the game went on. He just has such a good feel for the game and is able to make big pitches in big spots,” said the Cardinals’ head coach, Joe Scarano. “There’s a reason he’s an All-American.”

It wasn’t just Van Sickler’s pitching that had the Royals’ offense blowing steam. In the fifth inning, with Front Royal leading 1-0 and one out, Van Sickler -- as cool as if he were playing a game of backyard wiffle ball -- fielded a hard-hit grounder up the middle that ricocheted off his left leg, to throw Winchester’s Steven Sabins, a junior infielder from Oklahoma State, out at first base.

Van Sickler pitched eight shut-out innings, and didn’t give up a run until the ninth inning when the Royals’ Bobby Rauh, a redshirt sophomore from Daytona State, hit a three-run shot to left field.

“Greg had a complete-game shutout going, was at 80 pitches and hadn’t shown any signs of fatigue, so we sent him back out there to pitch in the ninth. A case could be made for leaving him out there for one too many hitters, but we felt this was a special situation for Greg. Sometimes the game speeds up and as a manager it can be difficult to make all the right moves. That’s why having experienced and talented kids like Ryan George in the bullpen is so important. It helps us overcome when the game gets tough,” Scarano said.

With no outs in the ninth, and the Cardinals leading 4-3, Scarano brought in Ryan George, a junior right-hander from Holy Cross. George got a fly-out and struck out two to get the save for Front Royal.

“It was a great win for us,” said Scarano. “And I’m really happy for our guys.”

After two games, the undefeated Cardinals stand alone atop the VBL North Division. Only two other VBL teams remain unbeaten, Staunton and Luray.

Next on the schedule for the Cardinals is a match-up with Waynesboro (1-1), the 2007 VBL Champions and the 2008 VBL South Champions. The Cardinals host the Generals at Bing Crosby Stadium Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. for Front Royal’s home opener.

“I hope our fans come out to support us on Tuesday. It should be a good game, against a quality team,” said Scarano. “We are looking forward to playing for our Front Royal fans.”

6.7.09 Cardinals Make Statement in Season Opener

Hang Ten Runs on Haymarket

HAYMARKET, VA. --- The Front Royal Cardinals stunned host Haymarket last night in a stellar season-opening performance. The Cards overwhelmed the Senators on offense putting up 10 runs on 16 hits, with 4 stolen bases and 2 home runs.  Front Royal's defense was also impressive on the first showing of the year, allowing just four hits and turning three double plays.

Robert Nixon (Adelphi), a sophomore from Welland, Ont., led the way for the Cardinals on the mound.  Nixon pitched six shut-out innings and fanned four Haymarket hitters to get the win.

"Robert pitched well," said first-year head coach Joe Scarano.  "He was down in the zone and throwing strikes.  I believe he had 13 ground-ball outs and was never really in any trouble.  It was a very solid start.  Robert set the tone and  gave his team a chance to win."

Three other pitchers made their debut for the Cardinals Saturday night: Oren Rasowsky of Aldelphi, a sophomore from Glenmont, N.Y.; George Fernandez of Seton Hall, a freshman from Union, N.J.; and Carrick Tuck of West Alabama, a junior from Cedar Key, Fla.

The Cardinals' two home runs of the evening both came off the bat of sophomore third-baseman Steven McQuail (Canisius).  McQuail, of Wantagh, N.Y., was perfect at the plate for Front Royal, going 5-5 with three RBI and five runs scored.

"Steven had a great game, both offensively and defensively" said Scarano.  "He really made a statement with his play tonight."

Other offensive leaders for the Cardinals were catcher Robby Newman (Longwood), a freshman from Virginia Beach, Va. FRONT ROYAL, VA. --- Front Royal Cardinals fans will have to wait a few more days to watch the debut of their new 2009 team.  Friday night's season opener, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bing Crosby Stadium against the Fauquier Gators, has been postponed due to inclement weather.  The game has been rescheduled for June 15.

The Cards will now open their season on the road.  The team travels to Haymarket on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Senators, and on Sunday to Winchester to face the Royals for a 6:00 p.m. start.  The Cardinals return to Bing Crosby on Tuesday where they will play their home opener against the Waynesboro Generals at 7:30 p.m.

"We have a talented and hard-working group of guys," says first-year head coach Joe Scarano.  "And I really hope our community comes out to see and support the team on Tuesday night."

"We are anxious to start the season," Scarano continues.  "And to see how we compete against the other teams in the very competitive Valley League.  We are also looking forward to getting to know the Cardinal fans and larger Front Royal community."
